FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
|
No. 45
|
|
Dear Friends,
It is Labor Day Weekend and that means, of course, that summer activities
are dying down and the fall schedule is coming back to life. It is "back-to-school"
time and a time to prepare ourselves for a much more regulated lifestyle
than during the lazy, hazy days of July and August. It also means that
the relaxed activities of the church's summer schedule are soon to be
replaced by the very full calendar which details the life of our active
congregational life.
Labor Day Weekend also means the return of the Rev. Peter Gomes to our
pulpit. We are pleased that our good friend will be preaching here on
September 1st.
It is also an exciting time for The Church of the Pilgrimage in that
we will all be able to welcome Dan Spacek to our ministerial staff. Dan
is a fine young man of many gifts and we are, indeed, fortunate to have
him as our interim associate minister. Dan is a recent graduate of The
Pacific School of Religion and he has already joined us on a full time
basis. Dan and I have had frequent meetings during August and he has been
meeting with the Christian Education Committee to make plans for our vital
and energetic Christian education program for the 2002-2003 season. He
has been studying our new curriculum and generally getting to know our
congregation as he settles into life in Plymouth and The Church of the
Pilgrimage. Together Dan and I are considering ways in which we can best
lead the congregation into its very promising future. I am extremely pleased
to have Dan as a colleague in ministry! He has an office in the Church
House and may be reached by calling the church office.
Very soon, too, we will be mapping out plans for the much needed improvement
of our facilities. The congregation voted to accept the recommendations
of our Feasibility Study Report and it is now time for us to put our vote
into action. Of course, the work ahead of us will require of us a great
deal of effort and careful planning. Yet, the implementation of our goals
is an exciting prospect and we seek to address both present needs and
to leave a lasting and quality legacy for those who come after us. In
our efforts to improve our physical facilities it is crucial to remember
that in building for the present and the future we are seeking to honor
God in so doing and to make a sure and certain statement about the power
of faith to bring meaning and stability to our lives. Our significant
history as a congregation of the "Lord's free people" ought
to be our guide as we build for the future. Our's is a living history
and within it is the seed of the future. We are not merely a church of
memories, but a church of dreams.
We are not only a church bearing the legacy, and a glorious one, of the
Pilgrims, but we are also the people of God on a pilgrimage into God's
future.
I am energized by the potential for service before us! May God bless
us as we worship, pray and work together!
Love,
Gary

| PLEASE NOTE
We are very pleased to have Dan Spacek with us as our interim associate
minister.
Please remember as we begin our fall schedule that any information you
wish to be included in The Pilgrimage Herald must be submitted to the
church office on the Monday prior to any given Sunday.
One of the lapel microphones used by the ministers has been misplaced.
If you have knowledge about its whereabouts, please call the church
office or Rev. Marks.
Rev. Marks preached at South Pond Chapel on August 18th. He also conducted
a worship service at the Evanswood Center on August 14th. On August
17 Rev. Marks took part in the dedication of the newly placed Peace
Pole in Brewster Gardens.
We thank Alan and Verna Hoyt for hosting a choir party on August 18th.
Women's Guild will meet on September 13, 2002 at 12:00 p.m. for our
first meeting of the coming year. A pot luck luncheon will be served
by the Executive Board. Rev. Gary marks will be our speaker. All women
of the church are invited to attend and join the Guild if they are interested.
The Pilgrimage Women's Fellowships first meeting on September 9 will
be an International Pot Luck Dinner at 6:00 P.M. in Allerton Hall. We
request you bring a guest--the more the merrier! A-D: Salad; E-O: Main
dish; P-Z: Desserts. See you there!
Harvest Fair-As you clean out closets and cupboards this fall, please
remember to save any extra linens or candleholders for our Linens and
Things table at the fair this year. If you need a pick up or delivery
of items, call Gayle David at (508) 746-9182 and she will gladly accommodate
you. We are also collecting used and useful toys for a special table
for the children at the fair and you can deposit them in the basket
in the vestibule at the church any time or call Diana Budge for other
arrangements. A craft evening will be held on September 11 at 7:00 P.M.
at Pinewood Lodge. It is being organized by Linda Saunders and all are
welcome to an evening of productive work and fellowship. We hope to
produce useful items for sale at the fair.
Harvest Fair Drawing- The Harvest Fair is rapidly approaching as is
our Drawing. We have great prizes along with a few new ones. Please
plan to visit the Drawing Coordination Table downstairs in Allerton
Hall during Coffee Hour starting Sunday, September 8th. The Committee
will be distributing tickets to those willing to sell them along with
brochures. If you cannot attend on the 8th, we will be available during
coffee hour each Sunday leading up to the Fair. Thank you, Marna Blomberg.
I wish to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the annual
Golf Tournament. We couldn't have done it without you. Special thanks
to Dianna Budge, Patti Olsson, Pam Pawlowski and Judy Besegai for their
assistance. Special thanks to Cliff Sampson for his support and advice
and to Liisa Budge for providing the great trophies! We were able to
realize a profit of approximately $1900. It was a lot of fun and we
look forward to seeing everyone again next year! Thanks, Ed Pawlowski,
Chairman.
The Board of Trustees will be scheduling a work day at the Parsonage
during the month of September. The event needs all of us to participate
(much like a barn-raising event!). We need equipment, food and frivolity
to make this day successful. It should take one Sunday afternoon (1-4
P.M.) to complete. More information to follow. Debby Porter
The evening of "Soup, Salad and Song" is coming soon to your
church (a Friday night in September). We need breads, salads and soup
donations. Please contact Debby Porter or Dave Cowie for more details
and look for more information in the upcoming Heralds!
Our Summer Sale ended on August 21, 2002. The hard work of so many earned
us $4,020.00. The success of the sale was due to the wonderful held
of many people. Gerry Allen, Eileen Baker, Diana Budge, Billie Courtney,
Diane Cowie, Jane Cole, Alice Dunham, Janet Holmes, Lillian Knowles,
Pat Mudgett, Debbie Porter, Betsy Randall, Marge Sears and Ann Snell.
My heartfelt thanks to all of you. Hildegard.
A very special thanks to Hildegard for another successful Summer Sale.
The Crib Room is looking for a few gently used items. We need a port-a-crib,
an exersaucer and a bouncy seat. If you would like to donate a new or
used one of these items, please call Jenny Healy at (508) 747-7168.
We are in need of Sunday Greeters for September 15 and 22. Also for
the month of October!
Coffee hour volunteers are needed for the month of September. Coffee
hour after Sunday worship is an important part of the life of our fellowship.
We need your help. You will find a sign-up sheet in Allerton Hall. Please
sign-up.
Please remember Rev. Roy Colby in your prayers. Rev. Colby passed this
life recently and as you may recall he was an interim pastor at our
church during Rev. Marks' sick leave.
