FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT

No. 31

Dear Friends,

As I have been saying in these letters and elsewhere, I have been trying to keep a routine of following the Daily Offices of Prayer found in a book entitled Celtic Daily Prayer. The prayer book was developed by people of faith called The Northumbria Community. In fact, the prayer book is still in the process of development. It is centered in the harsh setting of Lindisfarne on the northern coast of England, not far south of Scotland. Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island, is an island at high tide only. At low tide there is a causeway created over which pilgrims to the holy place have made their journey for generations.

The first abbot (holy person) of Lindisfarne was St. Aidan who arrived from Iona in Scotland to preach the gospel in 635 A.D. I'd like to say more of what we know about Aidan and his successor St. Cuthbert, but that will have to await an occasion other than this letter. For now let it suffice to say that there is a power of faith palpable, almost, as a modern day pilgrim sets foot and spirit in that holy place. I was on Lindisfarne (Holy Island) for only about four hours in the summer of 2001, but its spiritual power echoes daily through the canyons of my soul.

The modern day Northumbria Community follows the spiritual impulse of Holy Island begun by St. Aidan in 635 A.D., but not in the sense of being a part of a monastery as we may think of that word. The "Companions in Community" are scattered far and wide. They come from all church traditions and, in some cases, no church tradition at all. They are people covenanted together, they are journeying alone and together, seeking and exploring a new monasticism. Details of how they seek to accomplish this "new monasticism" will, again, have to await another occasion.

I've been following the Daily Offices during Lent and I shall try to keep to that routine every day. I have, therefore, begun this ancient Christian practice at a very troubled time in human history, a dangerous time which desperately cries out for God's Word of hospitality, service and peace, all hallmarks of ancient and new monasticism. The world needs for us to pray, to be disciplined in spirituality, to focus upon God, Christ and the Holy Spirit in order for people to see the sanctity of life amid our errant and destructive selves. A focus upon God keeps us from focus solely upon our own narrowness. Think upon this prayer in Celtic tradition as a new focus for your life.

God to enfold me, God to surround me,
God in my speaking, God in my thinking,
God in my sleeping, God in my waking,
God in my watching, God in my hoping,
God in my life, God in my lips,
God in my soul, God in my heart,
God in my sufficing, God in my slumber,
God in mine ever-living soul,
God in my eternity. (Carmina Gaedelica).

Love,
