Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost

No. 41

Dear Friends,

If you read the Herald each week, you are aware that there is a flurry of activity this fall at The Church of the Pilgrimage. It is quite exciting and I love it! The Capital Campaign is moving on according to a well regulated schedule. Plans for the Harvest Fair have been grinding on for weeks, even months, now and will soon be here. I've mentioned the evangelistic program being initiated by the United Church of Christ in previous letters. That campaign is called God Is Still Speaking and I have been energized by its creativity and especially by the emphasis it places upon those in our society who are referred to as the "unchurched." The number of the unchurched has been steadily growing for decades. That designation refers to those who have, for many reasons, become alienated from the churches and to those who may never have had any upbringing or involvement in the church at all. The God is Still Speaking evangelistic campaign is also engaging the spirits of long-time and devoted church members who are happy to find a program that is focused upon the spiritual needs of all people and which realistically recognizes that spiritual needs are unmet and that the Spirit is urging us to address the gospel to people where they are. It is an exciting program.

In addition to all the activities above mentioned The Church of the Pilgrimage is abuzz with its usual fall activities and ministerial duties. We are still registering children in our church school. It is a special gift we have in the number of children we have in church school and I am inspired and refreshed by the presence of so many kids who are in our spiritual care. The Confirmation program has also begun and our Crib Room is aflutter with the cheer of the young. It is wonderful!

While I am on the subject of youth ministries, I want to thank all who serve as teachers, aides, and oversee our expanding ministry to our young people. Dan works with the Christian Education Committee to implement our dynamic church school program which is based upon an excellent curriculum. I stand in awe of those of you who volunteer to serve any way in the spiritual education of young people. You are a blessing not only to the church, but to those kids in whom you help to plant the seeds of faith.

Dan and I are also aware of the need for adult education within the life of the church and for activities which enhance spiritual formation and growth among our members. We are planning an Advent spiritual/learning activity and we hope many of you will respond positively by joining us in an Advent journey to Bethlehem. There are other activities for adults and we do the best we can with a limited staff and resources to offer spiritual growth opportunities to the congregation.

There are many other pastoral services which are not mentioned here that are always ongoing within the church. We are blessed with an active congregation which is on the pilgrimage of faith. May God bless our church! May God bless each of us! May we learn to thank God for blessings already enjoyed.

Love,
