Dear Friends,
Over the last few weeks a
great deal of attention has been focused on our Capital Campaign and,
especially, the Kick-Off Diner. I hope that you are among those who have
signed up for the dinner because it is a pivotal event not only in the
campaign, but in the life and history of our beloved congregation. It
also promises to be an event which will be both inspiring and challenging.
Perhaps it is providential that our Capital Campaign and the God Is Still Speaking
evangelistic emphasis are coming into focus for us at the same time now. I attended
a seminar more than a year ago regarding that program which is church-wide. That
is, it is an effort on the part of the whole United Church of Christ to reach
out to people in our society who have been estranged from the church and to those
who may never have had an active church life at all. The God Is Still Speaking
campaign also will draw attention to the wide and varied ministries of The United
Church of Christ. It will reflect the desire to follow in the footsteps of Jesus
to extend the grace and hospitality of God to those whose lives have been primarily
defined by the confused values of a culture whose emphasis is fixated upon purely
secular and material realities.
Peter Gomes once said that coincidence is what secular people call providence.
(I think it was Peter who said that)! Whomever said it, I find it a helpful observation
in reflecting upon our simultaneous focus on the Capital Campaign and the God
Is Still Speaking ministry of the whole United Church of Christ. I see it as
providential. I see it as God's working among us to address the often undefined
spiritual needs of people living in the twenty-first century.
It was Gracie Allen who said, "Never put a period where God has put a comma." That
idea took a while to sink in when I first heard it, but I have come to appreciate
it as a profound observation. God is not finished with the church. God did not
stop speaking, but is still speaking a Word of hope and hospitality to all people
in 2004-and beyond.
In our Capital Campaign we are attempting to show for all to see that The Church
of the Pilgrimage believes that God and the way of Christ are still relevant
to a secular world. We are trying to show that faith is the answer to the spiritual
longings of people who, for whatever reasons, have not been hearing the transforming
message of the gospel of Christ. It could be said that our Capital Campaign is
a local effort to proclaim that God Is Still Speaking. Both campaigns are vehicles
of evangelism. Both campaigns attest that we are not placing a period where God
has placed a comma!
I hope to see many of you at the Kick-Off Dinner. I am excited that The Church
of the Pilgrimage is a congregation through whom God Is Still Speaking!
Love,

Sunday, October 17, 2004---Twentieth Sunday
after Pentecost
Worship 10:00 am Rev. Gary Marks will be preaching.
Greeters: Janice Lee and Rosa Cook
The Pulpit Flowers are in loving memory of Mr. & Mrs. Clarence
Delano Sr, given by Clarence Delano Jr and family.
Office Hours: Monday - Friday 10am-3pm.
A Note of Thanks from Helen Belcher: At the Time & Talent Auction
in May, I once again won the youth group's offer of yard work. Last
Sunday, Dan and five others came to tackle an overgrown and weed-filled
garden. They ignored the rain while pulling up tomatoes, vines, pruning
a wandering grape vine, cutting back perennials, and pulling weeds
thereby producing several bags of vegetation for the compost bin.
Many thanks to these energetic workers for a job well done.
