No. 43

Dear Friends,

The Capital Campaign Kick-Off Dinner at the Radisson Hotel last Sunday was a marvelous event in the life of The Church of the Pilgrimage! I personally had a terrific time and I was touched by the desire among people to enhance our mutual ministry through the re-making of our Church House. I honestly felt, and was inspired by the feeling, that our Capital Campaign is an evangelistic and missionary activity which is energizing our overall ministry. The Kick-Off Dinner reminded me again of the vitality and joy of ministry at and through The Church of the Pilgrimage!

For sometimes now I've been calling attention to the happy coincidence of our own Capital Campaign and the U.C.C. God is Still Speaking ministry. Both campaigns have a focus on the need to minister to the spiritual needs of people in the twenty-first century. One poster provided by the God Is Still Speaking effort says, "Our message is 2,000 years old, our thinking is not." That is the truth! We are in a position of addressing the deep and abiding spiritual needs of our day and time with the gospel in creative relevant ways. We recognize that God is trying still to speak a message of hope and gracefulness to all people now and in the future. God is, indeed, still speaking and The Church of the Pilgrimage is still building on the foundation of our gospel hope!

The Kick-Off Dinner on Sunday not only put the enormous talent of our people on display, it was a display of talent being used as a means of our corporate expression of a dynamic faith. Those who make up your campaigns executive committee are deeply committed people who find great joy in what they are doing. The dinner on Sunday, so well organized, was also an expression of joy in , and dedication to, the faith which has life-transforming power. The afternoon's program was organized as an order of service. We laughed, we sang, we heard the choir sing, we prayed, we sought to learn, we were moved nearly to tears by uncommon generosity, we were challenged to proclaim a joyous and inclusive faith-we were at mirthful worship and rejoiced in praise of God! I loved it!

I am confident that we continue in the faith of those who first gave us a church based upon Covenant. Governor William Bradford, faithful servant of God's Word, said in Of Plimoth Plantation, something which is still our own motivation in living a Covenant faith in the twenty-first century. "Thus out of small beginnings greater things have been produced by God's hand that made all things of nothing, and gives being to all things that are; and, as one small candle may light a thousand, so the light here kindled hath shone to many, yes in some sort to our whole nation." We are still building because God is still speaking! We are owning a Covenant together to light candles of faith!

I thank God for all of you who helping us again to share in the sublime joy of the Covenant!

Love,

Capital Campaign 2004

Thank you to all who were able to attend the campaign's kick-off dinner this past Sunday. We hope you left feeling inspired and energized to help with the capital campaign!

As was announced at the dinner, the advanced gifts pledged so far is $325,000! The next phase of the campaign, during the next couple of weeks, is for the campaign visitors to meet individually with you to explain the goals of the campaign and how pledges can be made.

Also announced at the dinner was the Matching Gift Challenge made by the Dr. and Mrs. Goodwill M. Stewart. Pledges of $5,000 or more made between October 17 and November 14, 2004 will be matched dollar for dollar, by the Stewarts, up to a maximum of $50,000. This gives you an opportunity to double the value of your pledge! Please ask your visitor for complete details.

We are still seeking people to volunteer to be visitors! Please consider participating as a visitor to meet church members and friends in their homes to solicit pledges. While this role might seem daunting to some, it is essential. Please give this matter your fullest consideration and contact Julie Sears or Gail Mason as soon as you are able. We will train you and promise that you will enjoy your visiting experience! Your church needs you!

We will be cleaning the sanctuary for the holiday, putting together food baskets for the Salvation Army, and enjoying some tasty autumn treats.
