Dear Friends,
I never cease to be amazed
at the energy and resilience of the congregation of The Church of the
Pilgrimage! Recently I have heard a number of people express their love
for the church and who are experiencing a special "family" feeling
within it not found elsewhere in our growingly impersonal society.
There are many things going on in the church at all times. The activity
within the congregation has accelerated in recent years and I find it
increasingly difficult to keep up with all the many expectations there
are of the church's senior minister. Having said that, I also have been
finding the last four or five years to be the most satisfying and rewarding
years of my long ministry.
In addition to the general quickening of pace in the life of the congregation
we are in the process of considering our space needs for the present
and the future of the church's ministry. As we consider those needs,
and they are real and growing, our priorities must always be gathered
under the heading of ministry. We exist for service to God as shown to
us in the living Christ and all things, including space needs, are to
be considered in the theological and faithful context. In the delightful
movie, Field of Dreams, the character dreaming of building a baseball
field in Iowa cornfields is told, "Build it and they will come."
In our congregation the reverse of that advice is in play. "They
have come and we must build." That is the best reason to build or
rebuild! I hope and pray that you will support raising a large sum of
money for the sake of service to God and ministry in the name of the
living and dynamic Christ.
Also the church has been involved in an energetic discussion regarding
same-sex marriage. Overwhelmingly the discussion has been respectful
and most people on either side of a highly charged issue have shown a
willingness to learn and to grow as a community of Christians. Last Monday
evening more than sixty people attended a meeting to consider what the
Bible says, and doesn't say, about homosexuality. Opinions differed,
of course, and that is O.K. Dan and I tried to answer a request to address
what the Bible says in the few most often cited passages of the Bible
which have homosexuality as their subject. At the next meeting on June
1st the discussion of texts will be related to the specific issues regarding
same-sex marriage. We hope you'll attend whether you attended the first
meeting or not.
I find it to be gratifying that The Church of the Pilgrimage is a congregation
of people who care deeply about their faith journey on a personal level
and who are also willing to discuss issues of faith in addressing the
world in which faith also lives. I thank you for your faith, your respectful
ways and intelligence as together we move forward in love and peace.
May God bless us all!
Love,
