No. 35

Dear Friends,

Last Sunday was an extremely emotional day at The Church of the Pilgrimage! It began with a fabulous and moving service of worship centered on the reception of our Confirmation Class. The service was solemn and was a testimony to the sacred seriousness with which our congregation takes the vows of our Confirmands, as they own for themselves promises made by others at their baptism.

I want to thank Dan Spacek for leading the Confirmation Class so well over the last year. I also want to acknowledge the important role played by mentors whose own witness to our faith was an inspiration to a fine group of young people as they begin their own life pilgrimages.

The service on Sunday concluded with a celebration of Holy Communion and it capped the morning in fitting sacred fashion.

Between the Confirmation Service and the Congregational Meeting which was held later, I conducted a private Service of Baptism for Seth Bennett William Holmes. The Holmes family lives in Colorado and on three occasions now they have made the long journey to Plymouth and The Church of the Pilgrimage for the sole purpose of the baptism of the Holmes children. They have told me that they feel a special sense of sacredness in our church and that is a compliment to all of you who keep the faith here.

The Service of Baptism was followed by the special congregational meeting, which was called by the Church Council. The meeting was very well attended. I was deeply touched by all speakers who spoke eloquently on both sides of the issues of same sex marriage. It is, to say the least, an emotionally charged issue, but I marveled at the respect and dignity which characterized the meeting. I sensed among the vast majority of people a desire to understand one another, and to be sensitive to those who may differ from them on either side of the question. I also sensed an understanding that people of deep faith can have differences of opinion without judging the depth or quality of another's faith pilgrimage. It was a remarkable meeting. In the end the consensus of the meeting was to accept the resolution prepared by the Advisory Board. A report on the content of that resolution appears elsewhere in this issue of The Pilgrimage Herald.

Dan and I agree that it is an honor to be pastors of a gifted congregation of people who are willing to grapple with difficult, even potentially divisive, issues from within the gift of faith which we all share. Congregational church governance at its best seeks, as one speaker put it at the meeting, to "discern the mind of Christ" in the context of issues and questions of the contemporary world. That is a sacred process first articulated for us by our first pastor, John Robinson. I truly believe that The Church of the Pilgrimage is among those churches which represent the best in the long tradition of congregational self-governance.

I end with this thought: we are all members who have freely made a covenant to abide by the decision made by the "major part" of the congregation. This is our gift!

Love,
