Dear Friends,
For a couple of weeks I've been speaking about exciting times at The Church of
the Pilgrimage. I guess that is my preoccupation because it is true! There are
big changes on our horizons and several things have coincided to create the excitement
of which I speak.
Last Sunday, September 25, 2005, the congregation gathered for worship to hear
the candidating sermon of Heather Anne Moody at the recommendation of our Search
Committee. After months of meetings, study, interviews, etc. the Search Committee
opted to offer Heather's name as the candidate best suited to become our "settled" associate
pastor.
Heather gave a very good sermon and children's message. She was confident and
charming in her sermon, a sermon which reflected her theological maturity and
offered glimpses of her pastoral sensitivities. I am sure, as is the committee
which recommended her, that you will come to love Heather as we grow together
in our congregational life as the people of God. Heather has many gifts of ministry
she is anxious to share with us. She very much wants to know people of all ages
and interests within the congregation. She has a facility for conversation and
her concern for learning your story and walking life's path with you is genuine.
You will learn that Heather is a deeply spiritual person and that she will be
able to help all of us in the formation of a vibrant spirituality which extends
to our ministry to the neighbor. I am excited about the prospects of sharing
leadership and ministry with a person for whom I already have a rapport and a
growing fondness. I am pleased, too, that the unanimous agreement of members
gathered in congregational meeting corresponded with the wisdom of the Search
Committee's enthusiastic recommendation.
Perhaps I am over using the word "excitement" It is, nonetheless, a
word accurately describing much of what I've been feeling lately. We are very
near now to entering our completely reworked Church House. Don't let the building's
exterior fool you! It looks the way it always looked. The inside, however, is
a beautiful arrangement of space designed for educational and administrative
use. I have almost never seen such a transformation of the interior space of
any building as that of Church House! It is finally a physical statement of how
seriously we take our spiritual ministry and vocation. Shellie may be in her
new office by the time you receive this issue of The Pilgrimage Herald!
On a personal note: I am gaining strength daily since my surgery. It has been
a slow process and I feel impatient with my progress sometimes. I thank God,
however, that I am on the upward road. Thank you for your continuing prayers.
Love,

MISSIONS AND OUTREACH NEWS--
The Greater Plymouth Food Warehouse at 11 Resnick Road in the Glynn
Electric building, relies on individuals, organizations and food
drives to stock its shelves continuously. A new program to help
seniors in addition to the ongoing support for families and people
in crisis, increases the need for non-perishables, especially cereal
and canned fruit. Two large red bins, one on each side of the staircases
leading to the sanctuary, stand ready to be filled each Sunday,
to help address the needs of a growing number of people in our
community.
SAVE THE DATE: Please mark your calendars and plan to join us on
October 23, 2005 from 12:30-3:30 for the Church World Service Crop
Walk.
Thank you to all who have made donations and helped assemble ninety-three
school kits, so far, to be sent to children in Katrina-ravaged areas.
Thank you to Christ Church Episcopal for their contributions. This
Sunday is the last Sunday to assemble kits.
A Notice from the Cribroom: We are in desperate need for volunteers
in the cribroom. We do not have enough people who are willing to
help with the children to make up a revolving schedule. I am asking
anyone interested to please call me or to talk to me in church. If
we do not get any response, parents will be responsible for watching
their own children during church. Please help us work together. Thank
You! Laura Curtin
New Member Classes: Rev. Marks and The Membership and Evangelism
Committee are together planning to offer a series of three classes
for people interested in "owning the Covenant" with us
in church membership. The classes will be held for one hour following
morning worship. The first class will be held on October 16th at
a location to be announced. (It may be in the restored Church House)!
Childcare will be provided during the meetings. If you have an interest
in joining us in ministry please let Rev. Marks know a phone the
church office (508-746-3026).
Harvest Fair News: The fair is less than 5 weeks away and we are
in need of volunteers to help out with setting up and volunteers
for working on tables during the fair. If you have a few hours the
day of the fair, October 29th or Friday, the 28th we need you! And
your help would be greatly appreciated. A few tables are also in
need of things: American Girl Doll Table is looking for any gently
used clothes for dolls or Bitty Baby dolls or doll accessories. Please
call Marilyn Colburn at 746-8690. The Bubbles and Bath Table is looking
for any pretty hand towels, soaps, lotions etc. Please contact Barbara
Northrop at 781-582-2050 if you can help in this area. The Linens
and Things Table is looking for any linens such as tablecloths, napkins,
doilies, placemats, table runners etc. We are also looking for any
sewing items such as pillows, runners etc. that anyone may have.
Contact is Gail David at 746-9182. Debby Porter is looking for kitchen
help for the Harvest Fair Luncheon. She does such a wonderful job
with this, serving lobster rolls and other yummy items for lunch.
Please call her or speak to her in church if you could help her out.
Her phone number is 746-4109. Remember to pick up your raffle tickets
at church on Sunday. Dave Cowie has done a lot of work on this and
we have a lot of great prizes to be won this year. This raffle brings
in one quarter of the total funds of the fair. Let's keep it going.
Pick up tickets to sell to friends, neighbors colleagues and yourself
and have a chance to win a fantastic prize. Thank you Dave for all
your hard work! There will be a final Harvest Fair Meeting on October
17th at 7pm at Laura Curtin's home, 10 Kristin Road. Call for directions
if need be 746-7761. Thank you to everyone who has already signed
up to help with the fair and to all of you who work so hard year
after year on your tables! It is greatly appreciated. Sincerely,
Laura Curtin
