No. 31

Dear Friends,

The Apostle Paul writing to a beloved congregation of Christian's in Rome called upon that church to recall constantly the reason for its existence. I cite Romans 154-5 in the King James Version of the Bible because I like one of the words in English in that version.

"For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the Scripture might have hope. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus..."

The Apostle reminded the fledgling church that its reason for being is to serve Jesus Christ through whom we bring honor to God. It is on the basis of their like-minded focus that the congregation is to consider every aspect of its existence. Being like-minded does not necessarily mean that we agree on every issue within the church. It does mean, however, that when we forget that like-minded focus in serving God through Christ, we may be in danger of giving in to interests less significant than the high calling to which we are called. (See Philippians 3:14).

It is as we all intellectually agree, that the church is not it's buildings. It is also true that buildings are one of the means we have of doing ministry in the name of Christ. Buildings can be a sign for all to see our core belief that we are engaged in the "high calling" to which we are called which is to serve God by following the love shown to the world in Christ.

The Church of the Pilgrimage will soon have for its use a fabulous educational and administrative facility through which we may honor and bear witness to our covenanted agreement, or like-mindedness, that we as people exist as a church to serve and honor God. Any other reason for having an up to date facility would render the renovated Church House nothing more than a mere perishable building. By constantly reminding ourselves that our buildings are a means of service and ministry, themselves gifts of God's love and grace, our buildings become sacred spaces. Spaces become sacred only when we behave in sacred ways within those spaces.

Thus, I'll conclude these reflections by repeating what our Scriptures teach us: "now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus!..."

If we all think and pray for the patience God has toward everyone of us, we will continue to be a people who also dwell in buildings sacred only because they are a means to serve our high callings in Christ.

Love,

Movers Needed! The Board of Trustees will be looking for a group of people who can help move the items from the storage bin back to the Christian Education building (church house). We need trucks, cars, back (!), luggers, haulers, cheerleaders, snack providers, etc. The move may be staggered, depending upon people's availability and offers. It may happen over 2-4 days, since we do not have set date in which we can move. Please call the church office and leave your name and phone number with Shellie and we will get back to you. Also, leave the times you are available to help and what kind of assistance you can offer. Thank you!

Women's Fellowship: Women's Fellowship began a program this summer making meals for people in our church family who are in need for one reason or another. We have a good start with about a dozen names so far. We would like to expand the list to share the responsibility further. If you're interested in helping, please call Jenny at 508-747-7168, and I can put you into the rotation. These meals have filled not only a physical need but a spiritual one as well. Thank you to all who have been a part of making this happen and thank you in advance to those who hope to help in our future efforts.

HARVEST DINNER DANCE CANCELLED and FAIR LOCATION MOVED:
In light of delays regarding the opening of the church house, the Harvest Fair Committee has put Plan B into operation. Plan B entails canceling the Friday, October 28 dinner dance so that we can set up for the fair in Allerton Hall. If you have already paid for dinner see Diana Budge for a refund.
Due to the uncertain availability of the Church House, the Harvest Fair Committee has decided to hold the fair scheduled on Saturday, October 29th from 10-2pm in Allerton Hall, inside the church. We will do our best to accommodate everyone involved. All the regular tables will be there and of course the wonderful luncheon will still be held as usual.
We would love to see you there, so please come by and start your holiday shopping early this year! Remember to buy your raffle tickets, there are over $2500 in prizes to be wond in the regular drawing and over $1400.00 in the special drawing to be won! You don't have to be present to win.
I would like to again thank everyone who has helped to make this fair possible. We cannot do it without everyones hard work and dedication to our church and our congregation. Thank you! Sincerely, Laura Curtin

Gift of a Hymnal: The gift of a hymnal dedication is a unique honor to give and to receive. A number of our new hymnals do not yet have dedicatory bookplates. A dedication in honor of, or in memory of, a loved one is available for the cost of a $25 gift to the church. In addition, there is a small supply of uncirculated hymnals available for purchase, also $25. See Bill Harting or Louise Brown for more information.
