The Second Sunday of Easter
|
No. 14 |
Dear Friends,
What a marvelous Holy Week/Easter
Day we experienced at The Church of the Pilgrimage! Easter was as early
as it can be in 2005, but it was a glorious sun shining day, a bit cool,
but sunny and alive with the joyous news, "He is risen!"
I was feeling pressured this past Lenten season, frankly, because the season
was so early in the spring. I wondered how I'd get everything done and get it
done in a quality and inspirational fashion. In all the services and events at
The Church of the Pilgrimage it takes about ten times as much time and energy
to prepare for them as what you see. During Holy Week alone, for instance, there
were seven bulletins to produce. I told Shellie that she must seem awash in Orders
of Service. There are sermons to write, palm branches and lilies to order, music
selected, rehearsed and performed, furniture in the sanctuary to be moved to
fit the various needs of the week, a breakfast to prepare, special liturgies
(services) to be planned-and much more than that! It all felt quite overwhelming
to me on the Saturday before Palm Sunday!
Holy Week and Easter were, however, packed with the celebration of the central
events of our faith. The Palm Sunday Communion Breakfast and the Procession of
the Palms later set the tone for the week. The Wednesday Evening Prayer Service
focused meditatively upon Scripture readings concerning the Passion of Christ.
The Maundy Thursday Service, so solemn and eloquent in its rendering of the Last
Supper, was heart-throbbingly moving. The Good Friday evening service, attended
by about thirty people, walked all participants through the wrenching events
of the day upon which Jesus died. The service seemed to answer the question asked
in the old spiritual, "Were you there when they crucified my Lord?" with
a somber, spiritually moving "Yes!" The Saturday between Good Friday
and Easter always lives up to its name for me; it is Black Saturday.
All these events are intended to be a part of a spiritual progression in which
we ready ourselves for Christ's improbable Easter victory over sin and death.
For those who rehearse the difficult meaning of "Crucify him!," the
joy of the affirmation "He is risen!" borders upon the sublime, indeed
it is sublime!
The Sunrise Service on Cole's Hill was wonderful! About 125-150 people watched
over Plymouth Harbor to see a majestic sun honor the resurrection of God's Son.
The two services on Easter Day at The Church of the Pilgrimage were well attended
as the sun bathed the bank of lilies with a peculiar poignancy of Christ's victory.
The music of our choir lifted our spirits to heights wherein we could experience
Mary's meeting in the garden with a risen Jesus who bestows upon us all the holy
gift of resurrection.
It was a pressure filled week, in more ways that one, but it again provided an
opportunity for each of us to sing from the heart, "Christ the Lord is risen
today!"
Easter is a season. Join us for the song of triumph goes on and urges upon us
to live toward the unfinished vision of Resurrection!
Love,

Food Pantries: The volunteers at the Food Warehouse appreciate the
on-going support form The Church of the Pilgrimage to help eradicate
hunger in the Plymouth area. Currently the pantry is very low on
food supplies. The following items are needed at present: peanut
butter & jelly, canned fruit, macaroni & cheese, cereal,
canned tuna, mayonnaise and cereal.
Project for March and April: The Church School and
the Missions and Outreach Committee invite everyone to join them
in assembling "Gifts
of the Heart" kits to be shipped by Church World Service to
orphaned and displaced children around the world. Each health kit,
sealed in a one-gallon plastic bag with a zipper closure, will contain:
One
hand towel
One wash cloth
One comb
One metal nail file
One bar of bath-sized soap
One toothbrush
One tube of toothpaste, 4-7 oz
Six Band-Aids
We welcome donations of these items which may be placed
in the baskets next to the red bins for the Food Warehouse. It is
not necessary to fill one entire kit. Donations of one or two items
are appreciated. We will be collecting for the kits through the months
of March and April.
Looking Ahead: During the month of May, our church family will focus
on the work of Heifer International, dedicated to helping millions
of people in 125 countries, become self-reliant through livestock,
educational and sharing and caring programs.
NEXT MISSONS MEETING: April 13 , 6:30pm at the home of Meg Bross.
Prayer opportunities at 7:00pm on Wednesdays will continue during
the Lenten season. The Evening Prayer services are seemingly satisfying
a spiritual need for those who have attended on a regular basis.
Please feel free to join us on a Wednesday evening.
Time and Talent Auction: Have you filled out your talent form yet?
We all have talents that would be appreciated by others. Suggestions
include yard work, boat rides, dinner, garden weeding, babysitting,
tickets to an event, pet sitting/walking etc. The Auction will include
a dinner that evening and you are guaranteed to have a good time.
Please mark you calendar for April 30th and plan to attend! Please
return completed forms to Pat Mudgett at church. Help make this a
successful fundraiser! Thank you.
From your Membership & Evangelism Committee:
If you have a child in college or the armed services, please let
us know so we can send them a "goodie pack" from the church.
We've done this in the past, and it seems a fine way to have our
young people stay connected to The Church of the Pilgrimage. You
may provide contact information on an index card (available on the
Membership desk in Allerton Hall) or call the church office with
the information. Thank you.
The Church of the Pilgrimage on PAC/TV: Sunday Services will appear
on cable PAC/TV on Sundays at 8am and 6pm. We thank Tom Healy for
taping the Sunday Services which appear on PAC on a one or two week
