Pentecost Sunday

No. 19

Dear Friends,

This Sunday is the date upon which we celebrate the founding of the Christian Church. The name of events which created the church is Pentecost. The name Pentecost has an ancestry in Hebrew custom and in that tradition the day is called Shabuoth. It is also known as the Feast of Weeks, originally a celebration of the spring harvest, but now also associated with the revelation of the Law at Mount Sinai (Exodus 20 Deuteronomy 5). In Christian tradition Pentecost is a festival day on the seventh Sunday after Easter, celebrating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples fifty days after Easter. In the English church this day is also named Whitsunday, so called because of the white garments worn by candidates for baptism on this anniversary of the church's founding. The account of the Day of Pentecost is found in Acts 2:1-21 and that text will be the basis of my sermon this week.

It was not specifically planned to be so, but the annual meeting of The Church of the Pilgrimage will be held this year on Pentecost Sunday. That is so very appropriate! As we consider our church's work during 2004-2005, and as we contemplate our church's vision, mission and future, it is proper that we do so on the day when we remember and celebrate the birth of the Christian Church. The Church of the Pilgrimage is a part of the great living tradition which began when the Holy Spirit swept through those who were to carry the message of the risen and ascended Christ to the four corners of the earth. On Pentecost the Spirit, as promised by Jesus, gave the power of God to act in accord with the vision of resurrection to quite ordinary people like us. We are the bearers of Easter and Pentecost in a world desperately in need of hearing the good news that God still loves the world and that God is still speaking.

On this Pentecost Sunday The Church of the Pilgrimage is very near to realizing the long held dream of many to rebuild our Church House building. That renovation project should be seen within the context of our confidence that the Spirit has message of renewal and hope to offer to our community, nation and world! It is a time, as Pentecost was, to be renewed by the Spirit of God and to live out the cost and joys of discipleship. As Pentecost created a Spirit-filled church based on the Covenant promise, so should we be refreshed and renewed by the same Spirit among us.

It is a happy coincidence (or is it providence?) that Pentecost, the annual meeting and the reconfiguration of Church House are simultaneous realities. I accept all of this as providential and the manifestation of the Spirit of Pentecost, present and renewing, in The Church of the Pilgrimage. Catch the Spirit! Or, perhaps I should say, be caught by the Spirit! Let us all rejoice as we make our faithful pilgrimage as God's people of the Covenant.

Love,

Time and Talent Auction: A huge thank-you to all who participated in the Time and Talent Auction. It is all of you who made it such a success. Diane Cowie, Susan Healy, Alice Heckman, Janet Holmes and Hildegard Schimpf all baked 2 apple pies each so we could have home baked pies for dessert. Thank you so much. Diana and Arthur Budge were so instrumental in collecting money and setting it all up with Kathy Marks taking care of keeping track of bids also and putting them in envelopes to keep it all straight.
