No. 21

Dear Friends,

In an early T.V. series, The Life of Riley, each episode ended with the observation, "What a revoltin' development this is!" That's a conclusion I could have reached when I learned last week that I have an aortic aneurism in my abdominal area. As I write this letter I am still not sure when the corrective surgery will take place. I will have tests tomorrow at Mass. General Hospital to determine that.

I have to make many arrangements to be sure that all pastoral duties are covered in the near future. Dan is away this week, but he will be back on Saturday and will cover most of my obligations. We also have several ministers in the church who, I'm sure, will be able to help when called upon.

It is "a revoltin' development" that what will likely be surgery soon will also mean that Kathy will have to postpone our trip to Scotland. The Advisory Board had given its permission for me to have begun that study time beginning on June 21st. Clearly, if I have the surgery, that pilgrimage cannot take place in the planned time frame. We'll need to cancel plane, room etc., reservations, but that's the way it is. I do look upon this as a postponement, not a cancellation.

I am going to abandon my usual tendency toward wordiness and get on with making arrangements which need to be made. There is still uncertainly in what I know, so it would not be useful to speculate, anyway. I've shared what I know for sure as I write this letter.

Of course, I ask you to keep the church and me in your prayers. If you have needs, please call the office. We are extremely fortunate to have Shellie McCormack in the office. Dan will be available for emergencies and to cover pastoral obligations on my schedule which cannot be postponed.

Love,

Temporary Office Space: The ministers and secretary will have temporary space in the First Parish' yellow building behind our Church House during construction of our building. Our office phone number (508-746-3026) now rings is that building. There will be little disruption of our services during the construction period. Rev. Marks will do much of his work elsewhere during the rebuilding since space is limited. There is an answering machine for the office and minister now in operation. We repeat our gratitude to our Unitarian neighbor for their hospitality.

If you are aware of someone in the hospital from our church, please call the church office. The lists usually available to ministers at Jordan Hospital are not always there, though the situation has been improving lately. It is important to let Rev. Marks know of out-of-town hospitalization.
