No. 24

Dear Friends,

This was to have been my last Sunday in the pulpit before my long planned, long anticipated pilgrimage/vacation to Scotland. Actually, I had planned to include Holy Island (Lindisfarne) in Northumbria (Northern England) as one of the boundaries of a Celtic Christian pilgrimage with Iona as the other boundary. While my journey had a Celtic Christian focus, it also included destinations in Scotland which held special significance to our own Pilgrim story and legacy at The Church of the Pilgrimage and Plymouth. Among other places I had Perth on my itinerary. It was the publication of the Rev. David Calderwood's book, Perth Assembly, among others, printed by the Pilgrim Press in Leyden, Holland, which enraged the king and English authorities and set Elder William Brewster on an expedition of evasion which didn't end until he was settled in New Plimoth as Ruling Elder of the Pilgrim Church.

So much for those places-for now, anyway. After a visit to the surgeon at Mass. General Hospital on Monday (June 13th) I am awaiting an exact date in about a month for the surgical repair of the aortic aneurism in my abdomen. Thus, pilgrimage and vacations plans have been necessarily shelved. Following surgery there will be a recovery time of unknown duration. The surgery is fairly common, I'm told, though it is not common to me!

Dan was to have covered for me during the last week in June and the month of July anyway, and that arrangement is still in place. Depending upon the date of my surgery and recovery time, arrangements for the first part of August are still fluid. The way things seem to be playing themselves out it appears that my surgery/recuperation will roughly correspond to what would have been my study/vacation plans. What a bummer that is! I guess the up-side of all this is that the church's ministry will be on about the same schedule as has been planned for months. I've already expressed the down-side!
What I've said at this writing is about all that I know. Basically, you now are aware of my situation as I am. I'll keep you informed as things progress or change.

In the meantime, I hope that you will make the most of your summer and enjoy the short season of warmth allowed to us in coastal New England. I am in good hands medically and will mind the physicians advice. I do entreat you keep me and our beloved church in your prayers.

Love,

To the cashier, the "cleaner-uppers" and setting up for Sunday's sale in Allerton Hall. Thanks to all of you we made a total of $1056. It couldn't have been done without all of you. Thank you so much. Pat Mudgett.

Harvest Fair 2005 Hello! Believe it or not the Harvest Fair is only five months away. We are in need of many things still to make this event a great one, as it always is. I held a meeting last month to get an idea of what and who we had for helpers. I want to thank all of you for coming and also all of you I spoke to that said they would help. We are keeping many of the same tables this year with the exception of replacing the Critter Corner with a Jewelry Table. We are also in need of several volunteers who could give a few hours of their time the day of the fair to help with working at a table. It is a lot of fun and a nice way to meet new people. Please keep the fair in mind while you are doing your spring cleaning. Next week I will be putting in the Herald a separate list of all the tables and the contact person. On another note I am also looking for someone to take charge of the Halloween Dinner Dance. When I took on the responsibility of the Harvest Fair I did not realize that it also included the Friday night Dinner Dance before it. Being a mother of three, I feel this is too much for me to handle and would like to separate the two jobs. But that means someone needs to be willing to help. I believe that the same people who help with this event and still willing to do their part but we still need" a person in charge. " I know this is a fun event for the entire family .Please call me or stop me in church if you can help. Thank you , Laura Curtin 508-746-7761

Crib Room Volunteers:The crib room is looking for people to help in the rotation for volunteering during church service. If you are a new member and have small children, an old member who loves children, or just love to volunteer for things we need you!! Due to a lack of a baby boom the past few years we have less children in attendance, but plenty of people who need the room when visiting etc. I will be making phone calls to new members in the next several months to try to get people involved. If you see me in church and are interested please flag me down, or you can call me . The new schedule does not start until September and usually your turn comes up once ever six weeks. Thank you for your attention in this matter. Laura Curtin 508-746-7761

Summer hymn sings at the South Pond Chapel are sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Plymouth. The Chapel is located on Long Pond Road, off exit 5 in Plymouth. Each Sunday a different local minister leads the service. South Pond Chapel was built in the 1870's as a Union Evangelical church for residents of the village at South Pond in Plymouth; it offered them a place to worship close to their homes what at the time was a remote part of town. Since 1959, the Chapel has been a mission of the First Baptist Church of Plymouth, offering a place for people of all denominations to gather to sing their favorite old-time hymns and gospel songs together, and to hear special music.
The following area pastors will lead the services:

July 10 Rev. William Fillebrowne, Chiltonville Congregational Church
July 17 Rev. Bob Stott, Zion Lutheran Church
July 24 Rev. Margaret Lloyd, Christ Church Episcopal
July 31 Rev. Robert Merritt (retired)
August 7 Rev. Nathan Wood, The First Baptist Church of Plymouth
August 14 Rev. Gary Marks, Church of the Pilgrimage
August 21 Rev. Irving Beveridge (retired)
August 28 Rev. Peter J. Gomes, Harvard Memorial Church (Old Home Day)
