Dear Friends,
This is the time of year in the church
during which we focus our attention on the young people of our congregation.
On June 5th a Service of Confirmation will be held in which we receive
young people into full membership of The Church of the Pilgrimage. The
candidates for Confirmation will have completed a course of study and
will have been involved in mission activities through which they have
been exposed to Christian doctrine and action. We can be proud of the
Confirmation program we offer to young people which has evolved over
the years. Dan Spacek leads the class, but each Confirmand also has an
adult mentor who attend classes and activities with those to be Confirmed.
I hope that you will be able to thank those who mentor members of the
class as they share their own faith pilgrimage with those who represent
the future of the church.
Recently we have been blessed with a number of baptisms, six on the last two
Sundays! In those Services of Baptism you should be aware of the fact that parents,
godparents (sponsor) and the church join in covenant together to aid in the progress
of children in developing Christian faith throughout a child's life. We baptize
children in the name of the Triune God into what we call the "church universal," as
well as into the life of The Church of the Pilgrimage. That means that we recognize
our own responsibility to be present as the church as a child grows toward adult
life. We hope, of course, that those in the nurturing care of the church will
one day "own the covenant" in a United Church of Christ. Our understanding
of Baptism, however, is one that provides young people with a basic Christian
foundation upon which they may be able to express their faith in any Christian
church.
At Confirmation the candidates make their own the promises made by parents and
the church at Baptism. Those candidates "make firm" that the values
and principles of faith are those by which they promise to live. The Rite of
Confirmation is a solemn and happy occasion in which we should all rejoice!
On June 12th The Church of the Pilgrimage will meet in the context of worship
to celebrate the work of our church school. We are blessed with a growing Christian
education program of which our Church School is a part. We have more than one
hundred young people registered in our school and that is wonderful.
On Church School Day we rejoice in the presence of our children, but we should
also recognize the many adults who give their time, energy and personal dedication
to the nurturing of our young people toward the sustaining values of faith. We
could not maintain our Christian Education without the volunteer efforts of adults
who share their lives and talents with our kids. Be assured that I personally
give thanks to God for the commitment of our church school staff!
We have much to celebrate. We have much to do. Soon we will have a facility in
Church House which, among other things, will express in tangible ways just how
seriously we take our commitment to Christian Education. Thanks be to God!
Love,

| NOTES:
MISSIONS AND OUTREACH
Thank you to the congregation for responding to Heifer International's
need again this year through generous giving. By mid-May we had
contributed over $2000. Thank you to the children as well. They
should return their arks to the basket in Allerton Hall marked "Arks
for Heifer International." This has been a joyous time of
outreach.
Collections for the Plymouth Area Food Warehouse continues. Non-perishables
needed at present are: peanut butter, jelly, cereal, canned tuna and
meat, and macaroni and cheese.
New Member Classes: We do hope the classes will begin in the near future.
Summer is upon us and schedules are freer than at other times of the
year, so finding times to accommodate the most people is more difficult
than it might seem. Rev. Marks will share teaching of the classes with
members of the Advisory Board and the Membership and Evangelism Committee.
Please call the church office to indicate an interest in church membership.
DON'T MISS The Fifth Annual Church of the Pilgrimage Golf Tournament
which will tee off at 8 Saturday morning, June 18, at Squirrel Run
Golf Course. We're looking for golfers (beginners welcome), hole sponsors,
and non-golfers who will join us for a noon cookout. Golf, including
the cookout, is $80; cookout only is $25. Families please note that
we offer a children's plate for $7. Sign up in Allerton Hall after
church. Everyone will get a chance to win our great raffle prizes.
Call Mike Harrington, 508-747-2060m for more info.
Trip to Six Flags on June 22nd: In order to include as many people
as possible this year we will not be camping out the night before.
Instead, meet in front of the First Parish Office Building at 6am on
Wednesday, June 22nd. Bring a towel, bathing suit, sunscreen and money
for the park, lunch and dinner. We will leave by 6:15 am so we can
get there by 10am! Also, we will need several drivers. Call Rev. Dan
with questions 781-413-6794.
If you are aware of someone in the hospital from our church, please
call the church office. The lists usually available to ministers at
Jordan Hospital are not always there, though the situation has been
improving lately. It is important to let Rev. Marks know of out-of-town
hospitalization.
Delegates: The delegates to the Mass Conference Annual Meeting at Mount
Holyoke College are Trace and Julie Sears, Susan Cotta. The meeting
is June 3rd and 4th. Reports about the proceedings will be given sometime
in the near future.
Gary will meet for a consultation with physicians at Mass General Hospital
on June 13th at which time he'll know more than he does about the treatment
of an aortic aneurism. He'll keep you posted. Please keep him in your
prayers.
Membership & Evangelism Committee will meet for dinner at the home
of Lynnette Lancaster (70 West Pond Road) on Friday, June 10th at 5:30pm.
Call 508-746-7231 for directions.
Church Picnic: The Christian Education and Membership and Evangelism
Committees would like to invite the congregation to a church picnic
at Pinewood Lodge immediately following church on June 12. Please attend
the Children's Service in picnic attire. Due to a previous reservation
at the Lodge we will not be able to use the grills, but we will still
be able to use the pond and other facilities. Please feel free to bring
along our own small grill. In the event of rain, the picnic will be
held in Allerton Hall.
Do you need a ride to church? In the rack opposite the Church Family
bulletin board (in Allerton Hall) there are updated lists of volunteer
drivers. Please take a list and contact one of the volunteers whenever
you need a ride.
Knitters Evening is scheduled for June 14th at 15 Oak Street, Plymouth.
All are welcome for an evening of instruction and/or fellowship. Novices
and experts are all welcome. Join us. Diana Budge.
From the Nominating Committee: There are 3 positions available: 1-Music
Committee, 1-Assistant Collector and 1-House Committee. If you are
interested in serving on any of these committees please contact a member
of the Nominating Committee.
Jamming Season is fast approaching. If you have canning jars from purchases
at the Harvest Fair (or from any other source) please return them to
Allerton Hall. There will be a marked box near the mailboxes. This
would greatly help to defray the costs of production. Thank. Jenny
