No. 28

Dear Friends,

This is the first Pastor's Letter I've written in about two and a half months. As most of you know I had an abdominal aortic aneurism and it was surgically corrected on July 20th. The surgery was major, but I should, perhaps, use my Thesaurus to find a synonym to expand the word "major!" Recovery is slow, but I'm getting stronger as time goes by. My physicians tell me I'm doing spectacularly well. I'm glad I don't know how it feels not to do well!

I have been gradually resuming my schedule, but I know I must not overdo it. I was able to preach last Sunday, but I was very tired after worship and was glad to get home. It feels good to have reentered the very demanding life of a minister of The Church of the Pilgrimage, at least on a modified basis for now. I am taking medical advice not to overdo it.

Much has happened during July and August. It was one of my target dates to be able to attend the service celebrating Dan Spacek's ministry among us on August 28th. I did make that service and was impressed and touched by it. I love Dan and I'm sure he'll grow and prosper as his ministry continues.

The Search Committee has been very active in its quest for a settled called associate during my surgery and recovery time. In fact, the committee, while seeking my opinions and advice, had done most if its work without me. It is a splendid committee representing a range of ages and theological points of view. Once resumes for considered candidates were available I was able to read them. It became clear to me that the Search Committee was especially attracted to one candidate and enthusiastically so! Her name is Heather Anne Moody. Upon the committee's recommendation I was able to meet with Heather shortly after I'd returned from M.G.H. It was immediately clear to me why your committee was so zealous in recommending Heather! She is bright, charming, well trained and exudes a pastoral sensitivity rare in a person of her age, or of any age, for that matter. I hope that you will avail yourselves of informational gatherings on September 23rd and 24th to meet with Heather. Heather looks very much forward to these opportunities for you to get to know her and to allow her to get a "feel" for our congregation. She is a remarkable young pastor/minister and I feel confident that you will sense that when you meet her.

Soon we will be able to occupy our transformed Church House! Transformed is the word, too! When you enter the building you will not recognize where you are! It is exciting to think about Christian educational possibilities in adequate, appropriate, beautiful and such a safe place. We will also have real office space, meeting spaces, open areas-and more. A dedication of the new facility will take place in October. Please plan now to join in that celebration. Of course, the church is not its buildings, but buildings can indicate how seriously and enthusiastically we take our ministry!

I really am excited by what we can accomplish as a congregation! I look forward to my own recovery and to an outburst of spiritual energy among a people of God I love so very much.

Love,

He is also gratified by the able work offered by the ministers with which the congregation is blessed. Those ministers also extended pastoral care to him personally and he wants them to know just how comforting and encouraging that care was to him.

Kathy joins Gary in gratitude for all the meals which were prepared and delivered to them after Gary returned from Mass General.

Gary makes all these thanksgiving with a great deal of emotion and in humble awe for your concern.

An opportunity to share one or more of your favorite poems and to hear other workshop members share poems that they love. Thank you from John McNicholas and Linn Peterson for those who so nicely volunteered to usher over the summer months.

Harvest Fair 2005 :Believe it or not the Harvest Fair is only six weeks away. We are in need of many things still to make this event a great one, as it always is. I will be holding a meeting at my house on Monday Sept.19th, at 7pm. My address is 10 Kristin Rd. If you need directions or cannot make it but would like to touch base with me about the fair please call me at 508-746-7761.

We have an exciting new table this year, The Jewelry Table. I am looking for any jewelry (both men's and women's) and jewelry boxes. So start looking through that jewelry box of yours and your drawers of things, there's got to be something in there that you haven't worn in a year or two! I know there was plenty in mine. This should be a great table and hopeful a successful money making one.

I would like to point out that the Harvest Fair is $8,000.00 figured into the church budget. With the rising costs of utilities this year, I would really like to try to make my first year with the fair as close to possible to that figure, if not more than last year. But in order to do this I need your help. The table leaders who take on the responsibilities of working all year on their tables is wonderful, and we are always looking for helping hands in all areas. But we also have small jobs that require " no homework" all year. Those are just an hour or two the day of the fair to help with running a table or helping in the kitchen or even coming later in the day if you have commitments earlier, and helping with cleaning up. Any time you could give would and will be greatly appreciated!

I also put the list of tables back in the herald in case anyone wanted them again for fall clean out. I know sometimes they get lost over the summer or if you are like me I never got to spring cleaning!

Thank you for your attention in this matter and I look forward to hearing from you!
Sincerely, Laura Curtin

Memory Quilt for Dan: Several members of the congregation would like to put together a Memory Quilt for Dan as a gift from all of us. Obviously, it was not ready for the gathering on the 28th but will be presented at some future date. We are asking that all who are interested contribute a square of fabric, no smaller than 6 by 6 and up to 12 by 12 inches in size which will convert to squares and incorporate them into a random quilt for Dan. The fabric can be new material that reminds you of him or, even a piece of clothing or used material that has a special meaning. Cotton fabric would be best for this purpose. A basket will be available on Sundays through September for collection and there will be plain muslin squares for everyone to sign with a fabric pen at a table on Sundays as well for us to add to our quilt. We hope that many will participate in this labor of love. When we have finished putting the quilt together, it will be displayed at Allerton Hall before we present it to Dan.

Missions and Outreach Committee
The Greater Plymouth Food Warehouse at 11 Resnick Road in the Glynn Electric building, relies on individuals, organizations and food drives to stock its shelves continuously. A new program to help seniors in addition to the ongoing support for families and people in crisis, increases the need for non-perishables, especially cereal and canned fruit. Two large red bins, one on each side of the staircases leading to the sanctuary, stand ready to be filled each Sunday, to help address the needs of a growing number of people in our community.

Crop Walk Date: Please save October 23rd from 12:30-3:30 for the Plymouth Interfaith Community Crop Walk.

Thank you to Kara Mallon for assembling ten "Gifts of the Heart" school kits during the coffee hour last Sunday. This project will continue until the end of September when we hope to have fifty school kits ready to mail to the children in Kartrina-ravaged areas.
Faith Under Construction: Learning How to Live Faithfully Along the Road of Life: Join high school youth from around the Massachusetts Conference, United Church of Christ on Sunday, September 25 from 1:30-5:30pm at Edward's House on the MACUCC's Framingham grounds. For more information please call the church office.

PAC TV has been airing our church services on Sundays at 8am and 10pm for nearly a year. This is all because of one person, Tom Healy. We are blessed to have him giving so much of his time to this project. This program offers an alternative to other religious programming and is a vital part of our church evangelism and outreach program, but Tom needs some help. He knew nothing before he started this project a year ago. He was simply willing to learn and to practice and we look better every week. Could you help?
* Pick up taping equipment on Fridays and return on Monday
* Video tape once in a while to give Tom a break.
* Learn computer/digital editing, to edit our hour+ service to 56 minutes (done during the week)
Our church service brings to much to shut-ins and those looking for the kind of worship experience our church has to offer but who have to be at home. We have had many good reports and comments. The program seems to have become a regular for some people. Let's keep "the good news" on the air. If you can help, please call the church office or see Tom on Sunday. Thank you.

Thank you very much to our church friends and neighbors who contributed to the success of our bake sale last Saturday and Sunday. We were able to give the Salvation Army a check for $654.15 which will be used to help survivors of hurricane Katrina here on Cape Cod. Thanks again, Kara, Jenny and Megan.
